Caeli provides accurate satellite data that allows you to see average values of gas around shipping and road routes.

Satellite data for cleaner air around shipping and road routes

Over the past decades, air quality in the Netherlands has improved considerably. Nevertheless, the air has to become cleaner in several places in order to comply with the rules and standards. For example, the air quality in coastal areas and near ports, but also in the vicinity of road routes, is worse than in other areas. This is caused by emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.

In the traffic and transport sector, road traffic is by far the most important source of emissions, especially of nitrogen oxides. In addition, shipping is responsible for 91% of sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions and 24% of total nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the Netherlands. This means that steps need to be taken in this sector to achieve cleaner air. Satellite measurements can make a difference here, because satellites can measure nitrogen emissions in areas around shipping and road routes. By systematically measuring the air quality around those routes, we can respond to mobility issues. In this way, changes in traffic flows and emissions for the coming years can be made transparent and important policy decisions can be made on the basis of these data.

Caeli provides accurate satellite data that allows you to see the average values of gas around shipping and road routes. This data is obtained through a combination of satellite data measurement techniques, the Caeli algorithm®, and resolution to 100x100 metres. For the mapping of nitrogen oxide (NOx) Caeli works with data from the Sentinel 5p satellite with the instrument Tropomi. The data is easy to read on the map provided by Caeli.

Because Caeli uses satellite data, expensive investments in hardware are not necessary. In addition, Caeli works with a subscription model in which the values of nitrogen dioxide emissions are delivered on a daily basis. It is also possible to monitor nitrogen. This provides insight into the mobility of ships, enabling the right decisions to be taken.

Caeli's insights are the result of our super-resolution algorithm. With this algorithm, offered products can be delivered 'near real time' via an automated process. In very high resolution. In addition, Caeli is able to 'look through clouds' via imputation techniques. Missing data thus becomes visible.
